All about varicose veins

The word "varicose" comes from the Latin word varix or varicis - which means "bloating". Varicose disease of the lower extremities is a chronic disease of superficial veins that occurs as a result of weakness of the venous wall and retrograde (reverse) flow of venous blood. Reverse blood flow (venous reflux) occurs due to insufficiency of venous valves (incomplete closure of the valves) in the veins. After that, a whole cascade of pathophysiological reactions is triggered, which leads to the development of chronic venous insufficiency.
